Is the Slate EV Truck the Twenty First Century EV Off Roader that harkens back to the WWII GI get around vehicle?
Slate EV Trucks brought one of three prototypes to Washington DC in mid-October 2025 for consumers to check out and get up close to this new little, well-priced EV.
What is the Slate Truck?
It’s an all-electric – Single Motor rear wheel drive 2-seat truck that can be configured up to 5-seats with a choice of a 52.7 kWh standard battery, 150-mile Range, or an 84.3 kWh with 240-mile range, optional battery.
This is very configurable by the owner vehicle – it can be a conventional 2-seat pickup truck – an enclosed SUV with either a fastback top or a conventional square back top. Or maybe you prefer the Open-Air Experience – with just the back open. You get to choose that and so much more with Slate.
You also choose the color you want, maybe paint, but more likely a wrap, so you can customize this exterior as your mood changes – the body panels are made of a composite, not metal, though it is built on a steel ladder frame. – And YES, You can swap out body panels as you wish with the Torx bolts that hold them together. This little SUV is very reminiscent of the original Willys Jeep – the one that the GI’s in WWII drove. Though it comes already assembled, unlike those early Jeeps, that were dropped out of planes in crates.
This little EV truck is being offered at an under $30K base price – so do not expect a lot of creature comforts – or digital nannies – NO big center Screen, You can mount your mobile device – phone or Pad to the dash for your music and your maps. Crank Windows, or you can option electric windows. The tester did have electric door locks. We do expect modern safety features to meet or exceed National Highway Standards.
And it’s made in America, Warsaw Indiana – by a company that is working hard to bring back manufacturing to rust belt cities.
Performance – while we did not get to drive this prototype – it appears from the spec sheet – that you will not experience any G-Forces while driving the Slate Truck. Zero-60 mph, est. 8.0 sec. with a Top speed 90 mph. With a range of 150 base and 240 for the optional enhanced range battery with a 96 MPGe
Who will this little EV be perfect for?
It’s an around town vehicle, hauling light loads – it can tow up to 1000 pounds, and a few people. For anyone who needs a way to get from place A to B with little hassle and at a low cost. It might be a teenager’s first car, or a senior citizen replacement for the golf cart. Or it may just be your kool commuter ride – You make the decision.
